The town/city was titled after Lucius Quintus Cincinnatus Lamar II amid the reconstructionthat he was Secretary of the Interior in the futile hope that the then town would be titled as the territory office.

Lamar is east of Pueblo, on the Arkansas River in southeastern Colorado.
